Where do you live and where do you work?
My husband and I are now living in the West Slope neighborhood – and we really love it! It’s about 6 miles from the DOTG office downtown.
How do you get there?
For now, we are all still working remotely the majority of the time. But I have ridden my bike in a few times to the office and learned the bus route from my house. When we do return to the office it will be fun to do more of both!
How does it all add up? How much money and time do you save?
Since work provides an ORCA card, it definitely cuts down on cost. Neither biking nor riding the bus to my office saves me time, but both have other benefits. On the bus, I get the opportunity to really look at my surroundings, meet other people or read a book! On my bike, I get the benefit of exercise and being outside. Plus – it’s really fun!
What’s in it for you?
I feel like I am doing my small part to be part of the solution of our environmental crisis. I know it’s a very small piece, but I believe if everyone did a small piece, we could make a big impact.
Do you have any tips for people who might be trying this mode for the first time?
If you’ve never ridden public transit before, it can seem a bit intimidating. But, the bus drivers are always willing to help! Or, if you can, find someone who has experience riding the but to ride together once or twice.
As far as biking goes, I find urban bike commuting much different than biking just for fun. You definitely have to find your best route, learn the roads and pay attention to cars. Then make sure you are following the rules and can be seen! Once you have it figured out, it’s a lot of fun!
