Meet Richard

Name: Richard
Occupation: Initial Loss Reporting Associate
Employer: State Farm
Gets around by: Walking

Where do you live and where do you work?
I live near Wright Park and work in downtown Tacoma.

How do you get there?
I walk (or run if I’m late!)

How does it all add up? How much money and time do you save?
Although it is less than a mile, I save money both on gas and in putting wear and tear on a vehicle.  I never have to worry about parking or traffic, and know exactly how long it takes from my apartment to the office.

What’s in it for you?
I really enjoy walking past different storefronts and seeing the city change and grow.  I’ve only lived here a year but definitely feel like a part of the community, and a large part of that is from walking everywhere.

Do you have any tips for people who might be trying this mode for the first time?
Leave your wallet at home: It’s tempting to stop in for food walking by so many great restaurants. If you’re trying to save cash, eliminate any tough choices by not bringing your wallet. Jam out: Crank the tunes up to 11 and get pumped for the workday. Invest in appropriate footwear: Don’t burn through a nice pair of dress shoes like I did. Be prepared: Always bring an umbrella, even if it is sunny in the morning. Mix it up: Don’t always take the same streets; change up your route and discover something/someone new.
