Congress failed to act and on January 1, 2012 the transit benefit reverted to $125/month (from $230/month) and the parking benefit increased to $240/month. Employers can offer these commuter benefits to their employees pre-tax. Many organizations, including Downtown On the Go, advocated for maintaining parity between the transit and parking benefit and will continue to advocate for the return of the transit benefit in 2012. The Association of Commuter Transportation in Washington DC, organized an amazing campaign which included nearly 50,000 signatures from around the country in support. Even though the campaign was ultimately unsuccessful, the visibility it gained for ACT and transit benefits will set the stage for advocacy work in 2012.
