Since 2013, Downtown On the Go has hosted high school interns through the Next Move. The Next Move is an internship program that encourages high school students to get out into the community by being provided with real work experiences from local businesses tailored to their interests. Our most recent intern was Brooke Robbings, a Tacoma School of the Arts junior who is currently interested in business with a specialization in international.
“Interning for Downtown On the Go was the perfect first internship experience. I got to work with an awesome group of ladies who are passionate about making Tacoma more bike, walking and transit-friendly. I spent my days promoting events on social media, discussing and planning for events, handling and making spreadsheets, preparing and participating in events, meeting many people and business men and women in the community, and even creating my own SOTA-focused bike event!”
The team at Downtown On the Go loved having Brooke around the office and learned a lot about SOTA and how the students get to school.
“One of our focus areas this year is students and Brooke gave us so many great suggestions on how students get around, as well as how they interact with downtown and social media,” says DOTG’s Executive Director Kristina Walker. “Brooke’s support of all of our programs and her great attitude have strengthened our team and convinced us that the students at SOTA are truly going to change the world!”
Brooke is on to her next internship at the World Trade Center and we are sad to see her go but glad that Tacoma will continue to benefit from her great work!
Says Brooke in parting, “Both the Next Move and Downtown On the Go gave me so many great opportunities and experiences that are so important to me and my future. Having such a positive experience ensured my decision to continue interning my senior year, which has led to my internship with the World Trade Center – Tacoma. Thank you Kristina for all the amazing opportunities I got from interning for you, you are so perseverant and persistent in your work, I look up to you and hope to strive to be like you in my future career!”
