Commemorating MLK Day: Advancing Transit Equity for a Connected Tacoma

January 12, 2024 – Photo of the Week #02

Dear DOTG Community,

On this Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Downtown On the Go would like to acknowledge the negative impact that systemic racism and inequalities has created in various sectors of our community, particularly in Tacoma’s historically black community in the Hilltop Neighborhood. Public transit is a lifeline for many, and people of color are disproportionately more likely to rely on transit due to historic disinvestment in communities of color resulting in a lack of connections, safe bike infrastructure, and sidewalks. This is compounded in lower income neighborhoods where infrastructure inequalities are left unaddressed. The introduction of the T-link and recent developments in the area have brought new opportunities, but many challenges still exist. We must continue laying the ground work towards envisioning Tacoma’s future, where everyone has access to safe and affordable multimodal transit.

In the spirit of Dr. King’s impactful contributions of fostering unity within our community, consider attending one of these MLK Day events this weekend.
