Help celebrate “Walk Tacoma Day” by joining architect and City of Tacoma Deputy Mayor, David Boe, for the Walk Tacoma Architecture Walk on June 17, 2015. Due to the popularity of the event, Downtown On the Go will be offering two walks this year; a 1.3 mile lunchtime walk at noon – 1p.m., and a 1.7 mile walk at 5:15 – 6:30 p.m. followed by a social at The Forum.
The walks, sponsored by BCRA, will highlight 20th century architecture in downtown, starting at Wells Fargo Plaza at 12th and Pacific Avenue. There is no need to pre-register for the event, simply join Downtown On the Go at the start.
Over 850 participants have joined Downtown On the Go for the walks this year. “Walk Tacoma events are a great way to learn about the history and architecture of the community while getting outside to exercise during the workday. With each walk covering a different route and topic, I get to learn a little more about each corner of our downtown,” said David Schroedel, Walk Tacoma participant and Metropolitan Development Director with the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber.
Walk Tacoma 2015, sponsored by CHI Franciscan Health, is a nine event walking series held on first and third Wednesdays, from April through August. The fun, themed walks, now in their sixth year, encourage people to enjoy downtown on foot by introducing new walking routes, and sharing information about the community and its history through the guided tours. The walks are scheduled at the lunch hour and just after work to encourage downtown employees to walk during their workday, whether it is to and from work or at a lunch break.
The Walk Tacoma program will be honored on June 9, with a City of Tacoma proclamation. This proclamation recognizes the success of the Walk Tacoma program, including the new Walk Around the World Campaign and highlights the 2.5 million dollars the City of Tacoma has invested in pedestrian improvements this year emphasizing the importance of a walkable city.
